JULY 24th, 2010 We're inviting customers to help make internet history by taking part in the UK’s first ‘Foursquare flashmob’. Participants will have the chance to win the social network’s notoriously elusive ‘swarm badge’, which can only be unlocked when 50 or more users check in at the same place all within a short time of one another. While this has happened a handful of times where crowds were already gathered, for example at sports events and conferences, it is thought there has never been a successful UK flashmob – meaning an event or party whose sole aim is to unlock the badge. Helen Wilkinson (pictured), co-owner of Metrodeco tea shop, which is hoping to host the first successful event on Wednesday (July 28), said: “We have brilliant relationship with our customers that just would not have been possible before social media with all its wonderful opportunities to communicate. So it’s exciting to think that together we could write a small footnote in the history of the web. “Brighton is well-known as being the UK’s digital capital and unlocking this highly-coveted swarm badge will really put the city on the Foursquare map.” We're helping the event along by offering the first 50 people to 'check in' a free glass of bubbly. Metrodeco is currently running a Foursquare ‘special’ for people who check-in at the shop. To claim a free pot of tea or cup of coffee, customers are asked to show their mobile’s Foursquare check-in screen to the cashier. The offer is open Monday-Friday to anyone buying anything from the lunch menu.
