NEWS RELEASE: 10/10/09
The winners of Metrodeco's Brighton Aids Memorial raffle were drawn yesterday at a V.I.P. reception. The city's Mayor, Councillor Ann Norman, was joined at the tea shop by Memorial trustee Paul Elgood, who is also leader of the council's Liberal Democrats, and Simon Burgess, prospective Labour MP for Kemp Town. The array of prizes, which were donated by generous local businesses, included restaurant meals, designer clothes vouchers and a holiday in Ibiza. They raised a total of around £700, which will be added to the £2,500 Metrodeco raised the previous month for the sculpture. Co-owners Helen Wilkinson and Maggie Morgan hosted the draw immediately after the public art piece by local sculptor Romany Mark Bruce was unveiled. Helen said: "It's testament to the generosity and community spirit of the people of Kemp Town and beyond that so much money was raised in a single raffle. "I'm grateful to the Mayor, Simon Burgess and Cllr Paul Elgood for making the raffle draw a success and I particularly want to congratulate Romany on a wonderful memorial that will be cherished by the community."
